self-designed workshop

my great friend barb was at my house for a wonderful day of working in the studio together last week.
our plan was to work on getting predictable, reliable transparency with pardo and/or sculpey. pardo's crumbly texture was much improved by the addition of sculpey translucent BUT some translucency and pardo's slightly shiny baked surface were sacrificed with the combination of the two.

we discovered that domed and baked pardo joins beautifully with sculpey bake and bond into a strong lentil shape. and also that pearls can take the heat!

the bronze-y gold elements in the upper left corner of the top photo were a disappointment. before we baked them the raw polymer clay showed swirls of gold alcohol inks through the plain translucent clay. after it was baked, the plain translucent turned, well, translucent. so it just looks gold. the example above (light shining through those gold elements) looks a bit more like what i was hoping for.

maia's idea of sprinkling tiny beads in between the layers of polymer turned out great!

i'm not sure how i'm going to use these techniques...but i can't wait to try!

I loved SOFA, but I really wished you and I had gone together. Hmm....next year? I think Susie liked it too, but did not have as much interest in all the techniques as I did.
Hey, I was thinking about silver wire and the polymer shapes. (I don't think of them as lollipops! That was my neighbor!)
What a good time to use silver filled wire, eh? I thought I would look into the price difference. Silver down to $30.29 today. Maybe it will go lower?

Just checked. Silver filled is about 1/3 the price of Argentium sterling.

ok...silver over brass! i'm going to order some this afternoon! i love the idea of getting a heavy gauge and then carving (not sure with what!) into it to reveal the brass! and i can still get the silver look without it breaking the bank!
