arts and crafts mantle/ fireplace surround

before. colonial style builder's mantle.
fireplace dis"mantle"d (heehee). bricks (unevenly) covered with thinset to create a "smooth" surface to tile on. the top rows of my hand-mixed, hand-painted, hand-fired tiles had to go in first and set overnight.

then i set the rest of the tiles and grouted....oh, boy. the grouting. it took me 3 1/2 hours and each groutline and to be formed with my index finger because the tiles don't lie perfectly flat and i'm slow, so the grout was hardening. i still have a big, raw sore spot where i actually rubbed the skin right off the index finger (about 3 hours into the job).

after. with val's beautiful hand-made mantle.

It looks so nice! Now you need a big Henry Isaacs painting to hang over the mantle!
